Major Market Indices
The broad market - the ASX All Ordinaries - rose by 9.90 points (0.24%), finishing at 4156.20 points. The index hit an intraday high of 4159.70 and its low was 4137.7. The Index that runs SFE's Share Price index Futures - the S&P/ASX 200 - rose by 10.50 points (0.25%), finishing at 4161.80 points; another new closing record.
The "heavy hitters" of the Australian market - the ASX 20 Leaders - rose by 10.90 points (0.50%), finishing at 2206.30 points. The major winners in the "big guns" were -
- QBE Insurance Group (QBE), +$0.32 (2.09%) to $15.63 on volume of 2.8m shares;
- Westfield Group (WDC), +$0.34 (2.03%) to $17.12 on volume of 7.65m shares;
- News Corporation (NWSLV), +$0.42 (1.97%) to $21.76 on volume of 5.72m shares;
- Westpac Banking Corporation (WBC), +$0.25 (1.32%) to $19.15 on volume of 4.04m shares; and
- Australia And New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ), +$0.24 (1.17%) to $20.74 on volume of 3.4m shares.
The following stocks made up the biggest percentage losers in the big-guns:
- Rio Tinto (RIO), -$0.95 (2.15%) to $43.15 on volume of 4.1m shares;
- BHP Billiton (BHP), -$0.16 (0.94%) to $16.95 on volume of 17.45m shares; and

At the smaller end of the market's capitalisation scale, the ASX Small Ordinaries Index - the only place where underexploited value exists with any regularity - fell by -3.20 points (-0.13%), finishing at 2406.50 points. The major winners in the "pop-guns" were -
