Major Market Indices
The broad market - the ASX All Ordinaries - fell by 6.70 points (-0.16%), finishing at 4136.30 points. The index hit an intraday high of 4150.30 and its low was 4132.7. The Index that forms the cash basis for the SFE's Share Price index Futures - the S&P/ASX 200 - fell by 5.40 points (-0.13%), finishing at 4144.80 points.
The "heavy hitters" of the Australian market - the ASX 20 Leaders - rose by 1.40 points (0.06%), finishing at 2215.60 points. Within the index members, there were 9 that rose, and 11 losers. Total volume in rising issues within the ASX20 amounted to 55.98 while volume in the losers totalled 47.24m units.
The biggest winners in the "big guns" were resource (and particularly oil-) focussed, along with booze, phones and home equity extractions. What more could anybody hope for?
- Woodside Petroleum (WPL), +$0.77 (3.68%) to $21.72 on volume of 4.02m shares;
- BHP Billiton (BHP), +$0.25 (1.48%) to $17.15 on volume of 12.84m shares;
- Foster's Group (FGL), +$0.06 (1.15%) to $5.29 on volume of 8.75m shares;
- Telstra Corporation. (TLS), +$0.06 (1.14%) to $5.32 on volume of 15.49m shares; and
- Commonwealth Bank Of Australia. (CBA), +$0.33 (0.93%) to $35.63 on volume of 3.3m shares.
The following stocks made up the biggest percentage losers in the big-guns:

- Westfield Group (WDC), -$0.25 (1.48%) to $16.61 on volume of 8.11m shares;
- News Corporation (NWSLV), -$0.29 (1.35%) to $21.24 on volume of 2m shares;
- News Corporation (NWS), -$0.29 (1.29%) to $22.11 on volume of 3.16m shares; and
- Westpac Banking Corporation (WBC), -$0.22 (1.12%) to $19.47 on volume of 5.36m shares.
At the smaller end of the market's capitalisation scale, the ASX Small Ordinaries Index - the only place where underexploited value exists with any regularity - rose by 2.10 points (0.09%), finishing at 2403.60 points. The major winners in the "pop-guns" were very Energy-oriented -

- Mosaic Oil (MOS), +$0.02 (8.33%) to $0.20 on volume of 9.03m shares;

- Arc Energy (ARQ), +$0.08 (4.6%) to $1.82 on volume of 632,000 shares; and
