Major Market Indices
The broad market - the ASX All Ordinaries - rose by 7.60 points (0.18%), finishing at 4123.40 points. The index hit an intraday high of 4123.40 (i.e., it closed at its high) and its low was 4111.6 set ten minutes after the open.
A 12-point range? Are they trying to starve SPI scalpers, or what?
Total volume traded on the ASX was better than yesterday, but still pretty lame at just 780 million units, 15.3% below its 10-day average. 196 All Ords index members rose, while 175 fell for the day. Volume in losers was 206.72 units which was less than the 214.52units traded in advancing stocks.
The Index that forms the cash basis for the SFE's Share Price Index Futures - the S&P/ASX 200 - rose by 9.40 points (0.23%), finishing at 4142.00 points.
The "heavy hitters" of the Australian market - the ASX 20 Leaders - rose by 4.00 points (0.18%), finishing at 2237.20 points. Within the index members, there were 11 that rose, and 9 losers. Total volume in rising issues within the ASX20 amounted to 48.5 while volume in the losers totalled 37.17m units.
The major winners in the "big guns" were -
- Woodside Petroleum (WPL), +$0.37 (1.47%) to $25.59 on volume of 1.01m shares;
- Australia & New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ), +$0.23 (1.1%) to $21.12 on volume of 4.05m shares;
- Coles Myer (CML), +$0.10 (1.1%) to $9.21 on volume of 4.18m shares;
- Rio Tinto (RIO), +$0.35 (0.78%) to $45.45 on volume of 1.55m shares; and
- Alumina (AWC), +$0.04 (0.66%) to $6.13 on volume of 3.39m shares.
The following stocks made up the biggest percentage losers in the big-guns:

- QBE Insurance Group (QBE), -$0.18 (1.18%) to $15.04 on volume of 1.98m shares;

At the smaller end of the market's capitalisation scale, the ASX Small Ordinaries Index - the only place where underexploited value exists with any regularity - rose by 7.00 points (0.30%), finishing at 2329.40 points. The major winners in the "pop-guns" were -
- Hpal (HPX), +$0.09 (5.66%) to $1.68 on volume of 18,000 shares;
- Citect Corporation (CTL), +$0.06 (5.45%) to $1.16 on volume of 458,000 shares;
- Beach Petroleum (BPT), +$0.03 (4.84%) to $0.65 on volume of 870,000 shares;
- Hills Motorway Group (HLY), +$0.45 (4.17%) to $11.25 on volume of 281,000 shares; and
- Mcguigan Simeon Wines (MGW), +$0.17 (4%) to $4.42 on volume of 1.58m shares.

The worst-performed sector today was Telecommunications which lost 0.36% to 1786.80 points - not bad, really. There are only two stock in the sector, which is absolutely dominated by Telstra, so it's no surprise that TLS fell by anout hte same amount as the entire sector (or vice versa)... but really, it was a case of the close being 1 or 2 ticks below the open for both stocks...
