Major Market Indices

The broad market - the ASX All Ordinaries - rose by 5.70 points (0.13%), finishing at 4259.90 points. The index hit an intraday high of 4271.20 and its low was 4247.9.

Total volume traded on the ASX was 0.83 billion units, 3.2% below its 10-day average.Of the 483 stocks in the index, 185 rose while 175 fell. Volume was tilted in favour of the gainers by a margin of 1.2:1, with 155.95million shares traded in gainers while 130.72million shares traded in they days losers ..

The Index that forms the cash basis for the SFE's Share Price Index Futures - the S&P/ASX 200 - rose by 6.00 points (0.14%), finishing at 4298.40 points.

The "heavy hitters" of the Australian market - the ASX 20 Leaders - fell by 4.60 points (-0.20%), finishing at 2308.60 points. Within the index members, there were 10 that rose, and 9 losers. Total volume in rising issues within the ASX20 amounted to 39.1 while volume in the losers totalled 27.57m units.

The major winners in the "big guns" were -

  • Woodside Petroleum (WPL), +$0.47 (1.64%) to $29.18 on volume of 593,000 shares;
  • AMP Limited (AMP), +$0.07 (1.06%) to $6.67 on volume of 9.6m shares; and
  • St George Bank (SGB), +$0.21 (0.8%) to $26.32 on volume of 899,000 shares; and
  • Foster's Group (FGL), +$0.03 (0.56%) to $5.41 on volume of 7.72m shares; and
  • Coles Myer Ltd (CML), +$0.05 (0.54%) to $9.24 on volume of 2.48m shares.

The following stocks made up the biggest percentage losers in the big-guns:

  • Westfield Group (WDC), -$0.29 (1.64%) to $17.38 on volume of 4.18m shares;
  • Rio Tinto (RIO), -$0.48 (1.04%) to $45.77 on volume of 2.46m shares; and
  • BHP Billiton (BHP), -$0.13 (0.7%) to $18.54 on volume of 8.99m shares; and
  • Australia And New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ), -$0.13 (0.61%) to $21.15 on volume of 3.42m shares; and
  • Amcor (AMC), -$0.04 (0.58%) to $6.81 on volume of 1.87m shares.

At the smaller end of the market's capitalisation scale, the ASX Small Ordinaries Index - the only place where underexploited value exists with any regularity - rose by 5.20 points (0.22%), finishing at 2372.40 points. The major winners in the "pop-guns" were -

  • Petsec Energy (PSA), +$0.090 (8.74%) to $1.120 on volume of 1.06m shares;
  • Multiemedia (MUL), +$0.001 (7.14%) to $0.015 on volume of 2.7m shares; and
  • G.U.D. Holdings (GUD), +$0.460 (6.8%) to $7.220 on volume of 668,000 shares; and
  • Ventracor (VCR), +$0.090 (6.32%) to $1.515 on volume of 4.6m shares; and
  • Sirtex Medical (SRX), +$0.090 (6.16%) to $1.550 on volume of 121,000 shares.

The losingest-little-guys for the session were (in order of decline):

  • Sydney Gas Ltd (SGL), -$0.040 (8.33%) to $0.440 on volume of 1.87m shares;
  • Globe International (GLB), -$0.015 (4.55%) to $0.315 on volume of 543,000 shares; and
  • Psivida (PSD), -$0.035 (4.07%) to $0.825 on volume of 573,000 shares; and
  • Nylex (NLX), -$0.010 (3.64%) to $0.265 on volume of 946,000 shares; and

  • Caltex Australia (CTX), +$0.170 (1.01%) to $17.070 on volume of 505,000 shares.

Second in the sector leadership stakes was Industrials which gained 0.48% to 5104.30 points. The sector leaders were -

  • Transfield Services (TSE), +$0.090 (1.27%) to $7.180 on volume of 258,000 shares; and

The bronze today went to Materials which gained 0.40% to 7453.90 points. The sector was led by
