OzRant: Boring...

The broad market - the ASX All Ordinaries (XAO) - rose by 40.40 points (0.91%), finishing at 4501.20 (4500-ish), although it only got above 4500 thanks to a 10-point booster shot in the final seconds of trade. That was also the high of the day; the session low was at the open (4459.3).

Total volume traded on the ASX was 1.2 billion units, 25.7% above its 10-day average. Of the 487 stocks in the All Ords, 214 rose while 126 fell. Volume was tilted in favour of the gainers by a margin of 2.5:1, with 314.10million shares traded in gainers while 126.94million shares traded in the day's losers ..

The Index that forms the cash basis for the SFE's Share Price Index Futures - the S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) - rose by 42.00 points (0.93%), finishing at 4554.50 points. As with yesterday, the SPI continued on its merry way after the cash market closed - adding another 8 points and sitting at 4561; tomorrow morning it will be ripe for a short (although probably not at the usual hour, i.e., not at 10:30 a.m. Sydney time).

The "heavy hitters" of the Australian market - the ASX 20 Leaders (XTL) - rose by 22.60 points (0.93%), finishing at 2461.20 points. Within the index members, there were 17 that rose, and 2 losers (the odd-=stock-out was Foster's Group (FGL), unchanged at $5.82 on volume of 2.31m shares). Total volume in rising issues within the ASX20 amounted to 77.92m shares while volume in the losers totalled 17.43m units.

The major winners in the "big guns" were -

  • Rio Tinto (RIO), +$1.620 (2.78%) to $59.800 on volume of 2.19m shares;
  • AMP Limited (AMP), +$0.170 (2.38%) to $7.300 on volume of 5.11m shares;
  • Suncorp-Metway (SUN), +$0.370 (1.92%) to $19.670 on volume of 774,000 shares;
  • Commonwealth Bank Of Australia (CBA), +$0.660 (1.66%) to $40.390 on volume of 4.42m shares; and
  • Woolworths (WOW), +$0.230 (1.39%) to $16.780 on volume of 1.95m shares.

The following stocks made up the biggest percentage losers in the big-guns:

  • Australia And New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ), -$0.320 (1.36%) to $23.280 on volume of 12.3m shares; and
  • Westfield Group (WDC), -$0.01 (0.06%) to $17.03 on volume of 5.13m shares.

At the smaller end of the market's capitalisation scale, the ASX Small Ordinaries Index (XSO) rose by 10.70 points (0.42%), finishing at 2538.60 points. The major winners in the "pop-guns" were -

  • Resolute Mining (RSG), +$0.090 (9%) to $1.090 on volume of 3.12m shares;
  • Mosaic Oil (MOS), +$0.015 (8.57%) to $0.190 on volume of 1.3m shares; and
  • Adsteam Marine (ADZ), +$0.130 (7.83%) to $1.790 on volume of 1.67m shares; and
  • Orbital Corporation (OEC), +$0.006 (6.67%) to $0.096 on volume of 1.3m shares; and
  • Wattyl (WYL), +$0.150 (6.25%) to $2.550 on volume of 413,000 shares.

The losingest-little-guys for the session were (in order of decline):

  • Kimberley Diamond Company (KIM), -$0.085 (5.96%) to $1.340 on volume of 2.12m shares;
  • Sydney Gas Ltd (SGL), -$0.025 (5.15%) to $0.460 on volume of 558,000 shares; and
  • ERG (ERG), -$0.005 (3.7%) to $0.130 on volume of 4.03m shares; and
  • Kingsgate Consolidated (KCN), -$0.130 (3.23%) to $3.900 on volume of 192,000 shares; and
  • Kagara Zinc (KZL), -$0.045 (2.7%) to $1.620 on volume of 760,000 shares.
