OzRant: Sloppy and Choppy...

Note - from June 24th 2009, this blog has migrated from Blogger to a self-hosted version. Click here to go straight there.

The broad market - the ASX All Ordinaries (XAO) - fell by 7.10 points (-0.16%), finishing at 4562.40 points. The index hit an intraday high of 4589.80 - set just before 10:20 a.m. Sydney time -  and its low was 4560.8, which occurred just minutes after 11:00 a.m. Sydney time.

The SPISpy e-mail indicated a high probability long-side opportunity at 10:45 a.m., which proved to be a tad early. After enduring a dip, a bounce, and a slow grind sideways the position eventually paid its way (i.e., half position exited +3, and the rest exited +6... or all exited +3 for one-lots), which claws back monday's dud but leaves a flat week, 3 days in.

Total volume traded on the ASX was 979 million units, 2.9% above its 10-day average. Of the 487 stocks in the All Ords index, 152 rose while 145 fell. Volume was pretty evenly split, with the final decision in favour of the gainers by a margin of 1.1:1, with 226.36million shares traded in gainers while 212.65million shares traded in the day's losers.

The Index that forms the cash basis for the SFE's Share Price Index Futures - the S&P/ASX 200 (XJO) - fell by 6.30 points (-0.14%), finishing at 4616.60 points.

The "heavy hitters" of the Australian market - the ASX 20 Leaders (XTL) - fell by 4.50 points (-0.18%), finishing at 2480.90 points. Within the index members, there were 7 that rose, and 12 losers. Total volume in rising issues within the ASX20 amounted to 16.93 while volume in the losers totalled 65.7m units.
