Major Market Indices
The broad market - the ASX All Ordinaries - rose by 7.80 points (0.19%), finishing at 4164.30 points. The index hit an intraday high of 4164.40 and its low was 4140.1. The low was set in the first twenty minutes, and it's pretty obvious that hedgies are expecting a stronger US market over the next couple of sessions (otherwise what explains the sudden interest at 2:30 p.m. precisely).
The Index that forms the cash basis for the SFE's Share Price Index Futures - the S&P/ASX 200 - rose by 12.10 points (0.29%), finishing at 4184.90 points.
The "heavy hitters" of the Australian market - the ASX 20 Leaders - rose by 3.90 points (0.17%), finishing at 2262.70 points. Within the index members, there were 9 that rose, and 9 losers. Total volume in rising issues within the ASX20 amounted to 51.51m while volume in the losers totalled 33.3m units.

At the smaller end of the market's capitalisation scale, the ASX Small Ordinaries Index - the only place where underexploited value exists with any regularity - rose by 10.50 points (0.44%), finishing at 2374.40 points. The major winners in the "pop-guns" were -
- ERG (ERG), +$0.07 (21.67%) to $0.37 on volume of 42.04m shares - sure, it surprised with its earnings, but that sort of price action shows that big money is now chasing momentum - which is not long-run good news (remember how BT ended up owning a shitload of One.Tel???);
