OzRant: It Just Keeps Goin' Up...

Note - from June 24th 2009, this blog has migrated from Blogger to a self-hosted version. Click here to go straight there.

First of all, a short note to Internet Explorer users; you might have noticed that the font size has gone slightly "birko" - it's a result of my "enthusiastic amateur" diddling around with the style sheet in a bid to get Firefox and IE to render the same page the same way.

If you don't like great big huge fonts, you can use the View-Text Size menu item in IE to reduce the fonts (that was half of the reaason for chaning the CSS... so that none of the font sizes were hard-coded)

Major Market Indices

The broad market - the ASX All Ordinaries - rose by 19.50 points (0.46%), finishing at 4236.80 points. The index hit an intraday low of 4217.3 points - set at the open - and the session high was 4242.30 which was reached at 1:30 p.m. - whereupon everybody clocked off and the market drifted in a classic Friday Fade..

The Index that forms the cash basis for the SFE's Share Price Index Futures - the S&P/ASX 200 - rose by 16.70 points (0.39%), finishing at 4249.10 points.

The "heavy hitters" of the Australian market - the ASX 20 Leaders - rose by 9.30 points (0.41%), finishing at 2295.70 points. Within the index members, there were 14 that rose, and 6 losers. Total volume in rising issues within the ASX20 amounted to 119.12 while volume in the losers totalled 22.53m units.

The major winners in the "big guns" were Woodside and the two chunks of enw Corpse - the echo-chamber of choice for the Fascistic NeoTrotss(I refuse to call those vermin "conservative"), and purveyor of Stalinesque propaganda.

  • News Corporation (NWSLV), +$0.61 (2.8%) to $22.38 on volume of 32.6m shares;

  • Amcor (AMC), -$0.11 (1.46%) to $7.40 on volume of 2.32m shares;
  • Westpac Banking Corporation (WBC), -$0.22 (1.12%) to $19.49 on volume of 5.91m shares;

At the smaller end of the market's capitalisation scale, the ASX Small Ordinaries Index - the only place where underexploited value exists with any regularity - rose by 10.40 points (0.43%), finishing at 2432.80 points. The major winners in the "pop-guns" were -
