While I'm here, I should also explain why the layout stuffed up (plus how - and why - I think any DoS "attack" concentrated on RantPro).
In the normal course of events, the layout for the Rants is controlled by a CSS style sheet (I know that's a redundancy.. a Cascading Style Sheet style sheet... but let's press on). that CSSSS (duh!!) is normally held in a repository on the RantPro hosting area.
With RantPro down (as a result of simple hosting stuffup or nefarious activity) the blog could not "see" the style sheet; so it just presented everything as flat text (blyeachh).
The same goes for all the images - they are usually hosted on RantPro as well.
And there's the key: anyone who wanted to dick me around would have been loath to have a crack at hacking Blogger... too hard and likely to result in legal action (after all, Blogger belongs to Google... would you take on Google?)
So, if you're that way inclined, you do "View Source" and look for URLs that might be vulnerable to your planned course of action... and of course you see that most img tags and a couple of atags point at RantPro.
That's how it would work. I'm not going to disclose how my mechanism for finding the culprit will work, but these folks are nowhere near as smart as they think they are. (That's if there are any culprits; it might just be a problem at the webhosting outfit).
