CORRECTION (3:05 a.m.): Something was bugging me about what I wrote about Fraser, so I went and checked. Fraser did not study Law at Oxford. He took his degree in PPE (Politics, Philosophy and Economics) and got a First. So the material was broader than Law, and he performed better than I had thought. Any man who can take a First at Oxon is a genuine 'mind'.
You Might think I'm a bit of a kook when it comes to various quasi-political rants about the desecration of what I consider to be sacred principles that define 'civilised' humanity - some of which sprang from the Magna Carta and have defined the West since the Middle Ages.
Among these 'core' principles - basically, bulwarks against State abuse of power - I count:
- freedom from detention without due process;
- the right to legal representation;
- the right to have your case heard before an apolitical judiciary and (in criminal cases) to have the case assessed by a jury of 'ordinary citizens';
- the right to abstain from self-incrimination;
- the right to call witnesses in your defence...
Really basic shit. Bundle it all together and call it habeas corpus if you like, but you'll need to add some other bits and pieces.
Anyhow - back to my apparent kookiness/conspiracy-nuttery.
I just read something that helps me get past the itching caused by my tin foil hat... the fact that a man as august as Malcolm Fraser agrees with me.
Now since Fraser is a former politician, his views are immediately suspect, since politicians are all self-serving parasitic vermin who should be retroactively aborted as soon as we invent time travel.
That said, Fraser is an educated man (I think he got an upper second at Oxford in Law, so he's not a half-wit like Howard), and has spent his post-political life trying to do something good for a change.
Now I'm just babbling, so I'll just hand over to the link, in which Fraser points out the very real, very Orwellian world in which we now exist in this country (thank Christ I'm going to get out of this place within a few months).
I urge you to read it from top to bottom, and if you're not absolutely aghast by the time you're finished, there is something wrong with you. It's here: A Bretrayal of Trust and Liberty
Get this straight , Australia: YOU HAVE NO RIGHTS. If you think that's not true, you're a fucking ignoramus - and since you're probably also a complete sheep, I have no idea what you're doing reading this... bugger off. Anyway, as a sheep you're in no danger, but everyone with a genuine understanding of the despicable gutting of Liberty in this country should be very afraid.
